Developers get sound advice
There are a host of regulations surrounding the construction of a new building, and, according to Peter Hepworth, one of the issues most fundamental to the success of a building is its sound insulation. Whether dealing with noise transmission between rooms, or minimising sound from outside a building which could affect the smooth-running of affairs inside, sound insulation is crucial to a building actually working well and being fit for purpose. It can also make the difference between being signed off by the Building Control Authority and being refused, with all the mayhem that a refusal can cause. Peter Hepworth provides clear guidance as to how to avoid this and other pitfalls.

The fastest noise-mapping package in the West (or anywhere else for that matter)
According to studies carried out by Hepworth Acoustics in 2006, the Lima noise mapping software package provides the swiftest and most accurate noise mapping program available, with efficiency settings providing calculations carried out up to 5 times faster than any other software. Conducted with reference to Defra’s Noise Research Advisory Service and focusing on the UK’s national road traffic noise calculation standard, the research found that the Lima software was streets ahead of the other four software packages studied definitely “best in class”.

The noise act and its repercussions for the
entertainment industry
Have you ever been in a pub and had
to shout to make yourself heard? Peter
Hepworth explains to Ben Walker of the Caterer and Hotelkeeper
why this happens - and why noise will soon
have to be a consideration for all those in the entertainment
and leisure industries. Not only will pub, club and bar owners
have to cut down the
noise nuisance to neighbours through music, and the comings
and goings of their
customers, but, from 2008, they will have to ensure their
employees are not subjected
to excessive noise. Download (Caterer

When does music turn into noise?
In Spring 2006, Matthew Gascoigne, Principal Consultant for Hepworth Acoustics, provided some helpful guidance for readers of Building for Leisure as to the difference between one man’s meat and another man’s poison or rather, in this case, one man’s musical enjoyment and another man’s noisy annoyance. March 2006, explains what the regulations mean, how they
will impact on employers and the most effective ways of ensuring
that the regulations are met. Download
