Hepworth Acoustics was commissioned by Barratt Homes to assess the potential noise impact for a large-scale development in Croydon. The site had previously been industrial area and its proposed use included 12 blocks of residential units rising to nine storeys in height, as well as commercial units and a children's nursery.

The location of the site presented a real acoustic challenge to the developer, as it was sandwiched between the busy A23 dual carriageway, the Croydon Tramlink and a large retail park. Hepworth Acoustics was engaged not only to discharge the noise-related planning conditions but also to provide our recommendations to ensure that future residents would not be subjected to unreasonable levels of noise. Furthermore, the client required our input on assessing the noise generated by the site itself from its proposed mechanical plant.

Extensive site measurement surveys of the existing transportation and commercial noise sources were undertaken so as to determine the noise exposure of the site. This entailed both daytime measurements and surveys during the dead of night to assess worst-case conditions when future residents would be sleeping. In addition, Hepworth Acoustics liaised with the Local Planning Authority to determine specific acoustic requirements and made necessary reference to the relevant guidelines and British Standards (e.g. BS 8233 and BS 4142).

Upon review of the proposed layout drawings, we were able to recommend to Barratt Homes the extent of the noise control measures required for the site. These included the specification of glazing and ventilation systems for exposed façades, the use of acoustic screening to protect external areas and the installation of noise control measures to proposed mechanical services plant.

Hepworth Acoustics was involved at an early stage of the development and this meant that the design team could plan ahead and the client was aware of the works required in advance of the main construction works taking place on site.
